Here is my own assignment where I discovered books that could be used through a science lesson.
Mary Beth Watkins
State
Course of Study Standards: (ALEX) Science
2005) Grade 1:)

Title Why is the Sky Blue by Sally Grindley Grade Levels:k-2
Two
Children’s Books -- One Fiction and One Non-Fiction Fiction
Why is the Sky Blue by Sally Grindley and Picnic Farm by Christina Morton3 points
Refer to the 5E powerpoint presentation for
activity ideas.
Engage -
Develop your own idea for this. (Suggestion- read the book aloud) 3 points
This book would be an excellent
introduction to young students about observing the world around them.
Explore
- Find an activity related to Science in the children’s book. 3 points
In the book, Why is the Sky Blue
by Grindley, the rabbit and donkey observe the outside world around them
and make comments about their observations. A good activity that a teacher
could use with this is to read the book and then take the students outside to
make their own observations.
Explain
- Class discussion of activity. (read the non-fiction book)
The teacher can talk about how it
is important to understand the world around them and all the resources we use
from Earth that right around us. (Then Picnic Farm can be read.)
Include factual background information
about the Science topic.
3 points
1.)
Clouds creates
rain that water the plants.
2.)
Animals and
insects have traits that help them/protect them.
3.)
The sun comes out during the day and the moon
comes out at night.
Elaborate
- Develop a second activity related to the first. (read the non-fiction book) 3 points
The teacher can conduct an activity
where the students can grow their own plant (wheat, berries, vegetables, etc.)
And then harvest them like they did in the non-fiction book.
Evaluate
- Draw and label parts, make a model, create a test...etc. 3 points
Students can create a journal of
their observations that the teacher picks up at the end of the unit.
Attach
any necessary pages to complete this assignment.
